Today is Mother’s Day. The day we celebrate mothers everywhere. Happy Mother’s Day! Without a doubt our mothers put up with a lot, and if you too are a mother, you could say the same. But all mothers are not only full of love, but give that love fully. They sacrifice, work, and do whatever it takes to be a good mom.
Without a doubt, I had the best mom in the world. We made cookies together after school. She shared her love of cooking, reading, knitting, and traveling with me. But even more precious to me is the fierce independence she imparted to me. She always made me feel like I could do whatever I wanted and not just settle. I hold her values to this day. She was fun loving and loved life. She was a great singer and dancer,(I didn’t inherit those qualities).
I was lucky enough to become good friends with my mom as years passed. I think of her daily, partly because she is such a big part of me.
I was texting back and forth with my cousin, Monique, yesterday about our moms. Monique’s mom, my Aunt Bea, was near and dear to me. I loved going to their house and just listening to the stories just pour out. Our families had some great times together, eating, drinking, dancing and laughing. As years passed, we saw each other less often. Anytime I would go visit, she would always have a pot of fresh coffee going and she would cook Mexican pinto beans. They were so tender and combined with the subtle onion flavor they dishwas unbelievably luscious! We would sit for hours just shooting the breeze.
My cousin and I have both lost our moms. Mine in 2010 and Monique’s in 2008. The sting is will always be there, but the love is still in our hearts. What we would give to see them again. Hug them again. Talk to them again.
So, if you are fortunate to have your mom with you, take today to tell them how much they mean to you, how much you love them, and be sure to thank them for all they have done for you.
Happy Mother’s Day!
